  1. Emily Dickinson said something about a good poem making you feel like your scalp had been peeled off.

    Sometimes, this poet makes me feel punched in the throat by my own bad behavior.

    This poem, “Diagnosed,” leads the reader to a shocking realization about the power of language, especially when it comes to how you speak to your children.

    What if, while I am “just kidding,” I’m actually doing lasting damage to my child? What if she or he literally believes everything I’m saying. How does that mould a personality? Chilling.
